What's the Chinese name for Church?
The English word "church" and the Greek original word for "assembly" are the same, meaning gathering, similar to the assembly in the Old Testament. In order to distinguish "church" from the words "assembly" and "congregation" while also indicating their common origin, we translate it as "集会 (jí huì)" (gathering). Familiar translations include "教会" (religious meeting) or "教堂" (religious building), but the literal meaning of "church" has nothing to do with religion or doctrine; it simply means "gathering" in common terms.
